Green Bean Casserole and Gratitude

Green Bean Casserole and Gratitude

We live in a time when it is easy to overlook the ordinary. In fact, we often find ways to grumble about it, when there is a simple beauty that we have failed to see and appreciate. It sounds cliché, but it is true that we have much to be deeply thankful for.

“…Be filled with the Spirit…singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Ephesians 5:18-20)

For me, this time of year makes my heart warm as I laugh with loved ones and share wonderful food. While there are many things I could highlight and while it may sound strange to some to say, I am thankful for green bean casserole and homemade pecan pie. While I fill my plate with them, my heart is, in turn, filled with a sense of peace and comfort. I think about the sweet hands that made these dishes, the times I watched my mom joyfully prepare her casseroles, the ones I spent with my grandmother and great-grandmother learning how to bake pies. Many memories flood my mind when I think about things so seemingly ordinary, but there is intentional love infused in them, so much so that I cannot help but be grateful.

When we take the time to look around, we realize that God shows His endless love for us in both big and subtle ways. It’s as if God has written more than a million sticky notes and purposefully placed them in your day and your life to say, “I hope this makes you smile! I love you, my child.”

I pray you take time to reflect on all the little things this Thanksgiving – green bean casserole, pecan pie, card games, fall leaves, hugs from loved ones, laughter and rest. I do not know what your Thanksgiving looks like this year, but I can guarantee the Lord has written you a love note, a reminder, an encouragement somewhere. I pray you take time to notice it, then thank Him for it. He is so good and deserves our thanksgiving and praise. And may we be filled with gratitude and rejoice in Him not just today, but every day.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 103:1-5)
